Create a Positive Culture & Climate

  • Create a shared social contract or treatment agreement - see example
  • Invisible backpacks - Be empathetic. Each student has different problems, worry, stress, etc. You never know what is in a person's invisible backpack

  • Rule of thumb - 4 positive interactions to 1 redirection 

Create a Structured Environment

  • Consistent expectations

  • too easy can lead to boredom & too difficult or lack of support can lead to frustration

Manage Behavior with Grace

  • Verbally, emotionally, or physically harasses or threatens
  • Hitting, kicking, repeatedly pushes others
  • Intense anger

AVOIDING WORK

DEFIANCE

  • Dislikes being told what to do
  • Does the opposite of what is told
  • Challenges authority

  • Messy and loses things
  • Difficulty staying on task

  • Argues

  • Stomping off, eye-rolling, sticks out tongue or other negative nonverbal communication
  • Lacks awareness about how to treat others
  • Lacks awareness about personal space

INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE

  • says curse words
  • talks about inappropriate things

  • discusses mature subjects
  • writes or draws inappropriate things
  • uses technology for inappropriate language
  • says mean things to others

LACKS SOCIAL SKILLS

  • Has difficulty making and maintaining friendships
  • Struggles to navigate environment
  • Struggles with sharing and with peer interactions
  • Inappropriate behaviors that push others away
  • Seeks attention through behaviors

FAILING TO TURN IN WORK

  • Disorganized - Messy folder, desk,  backpack

LACK OF PARTICIPATION

  • seems disinterested or disengaged
  • becomes frustrated if asked to volunteer
  • isolates themself
  • often says, "I don't know."
  • has an "I don't care" attitude
  • struggles academically
