Create a Positive Culture & Climate

  • Create a shared social contract or treatment agreement - see example
  • Invisible backpacks - Be empathetic. Each student has different problems, worry, stress, etc. You never know what is in a person's invisible backpack

  • Rule of thumb - 4 positive interactions to 1 redirection

AGGRESSION/BULLYING

  • Verbally, emotionally, or physically harasses or threatens
  • Hitting, kicking, repeatedly pushes others
  • Intense anger
  • Frequent conflicts
  • Want others to see them as tough

AVOIDING WORK

 

 

  • Disruptive
  • Off task
  • Frequents restroom

 

DEFIANCE

  • Dislikes being told what to do
  • Does the opposite of what is told
  • Challenges authority
  • Refuses to follow routine rules
  • Won't accept responsibility for own actions
  • Seeks control in all situations

DISORGANIZED

  • Forgets to take things home
  • Messy and loses things
  • Difficulty staying on task
  • Forgets to turn in work
  • Doesn't have a system for where things go
  • Struggles to stay on point

DISRESPECTFUL

  • Argues
  • Won't follow directions
  • Stomping off, eye-rolling, sticks out tongue or other negative nonverbal communication
  • Lacks awareness about how to treat others
  • Lacks awareness about personal space

INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE

  • says curse words
  • talks about inappropriate things

  • discusses mature subjects
  • writes or draws inappropriate things
  • uses technology for inappropriate language
  • says mean things to others

Lack of responsibility

  • Not turning in assignments
  • Expresses little concern for own success
  • Works at a minimal level expected
  • Focused more on social activities and games

  • Struggles to work independently

Lying/Cheating

  • Appears they are hiding something
  • May be acting nervous
  • May be involved in alot of conflict
  • Often looks to check on the teacher
  • Struggles to take ownership of mistakes

Negative Attitude

  • Saying self defeating comments
  • Dissatisfied

LACKS SOCIAL SKILLS

 

  • Has difficulty making and maintaining friendships

  • Struggles with sharing and with peer interactions

  • Seeks attention through behaviors

Name Calling

 

  • Teases or make fun of others
  •  Students and staff often insulted
  • Makes “inside jokes,” laughs after comment or words
  • Use code words- subjects inappropriate 
  • Use sensitive words in an insulting or joking manner
  • Blame or accuse others frequently for namecalling
